RJ (Bruce Willis), is a raccoon who lives in Tucson, Arizona while foraging for food, encounters the hibernating black bear Vincent (Nick Nolte), and his large cache of commercially-packaged food. RJ tries to steal it, but instead wakes Vincent and causes the food to be crushed by a truck on a nearby road. Fearful of being eaten by Vincent, RJ promises to restore the cache within the week when Vincent has fully awakened from hibernation. RJ finds a nearby suburban community that has been recently erected, and a small forested plot where a pack of hibernating animals have just awoken, surprised to find a large hedge that separates the forest from the human community. Verne the box turtle (Garry Shandling), the group's elder, urges the others to start stashing food for next year. RJ appears to the group and tells them they can collect all the food they will need within a week by raiding the humans' trash and homes. Verne is extremely pessimistic about crossing the hedge, but RJ is able to convince the others to join him.

Initially, the animals only raid for food at night, but RJ realizes he needs to work faster to restore Vincent's cache, and organizes daring daytime stunts, such has having the opossum, Ozzie (William Shatner), feign being run over by a car allowing the other animals to steal food from it. Verne becomes extremely annoyed at RJ putting his "family" in danger. Meanwhile, Gladys Sharp (Allison Janney), the president of the development's homeowner association, realizes they have a vermin problem, and calls for help from Dwayne LaFontant (Thomas Haden Church), aka "The Verminator". Dwayne installs a high-powered extermination system in Sharp's backyard, including a contraband product known as the De-Pelter Turbo.

After one raid, RJ is surprised that the other animals now consider him part of their family, and provide him with a luxurious spot using items they've stolen from homes. RJ feels guilt over using the animals and attempts to tell the truth to Verne, but cannot do so. Meanwhile, Verne, still worried about his family's safety, attempts to return all the stolen food to the humans; RJ finds out and tries to stop him, but the wagon the food is on is dragged by a playful rottweiler, Nugent (Brian Stepanek), and eventually is destroyed. The other animals upon learning, are angry at Verne, who tries to convince them of RJ's manipulation, and accidentally makes a remark which convinces the animals he values himself above the rest of them.

With only one day before Vincent's deadline, RJ helps Verne reconcile with his friends and convinces the animals to do one more raid of Gladys' home after she has received a large supply of food for a dinner party the next day. They use Stella (Wanda Sykes), the skunk to lure Gladys' Persian cat Tiger (Omid Djalili) away while the other animals enter the kitchen and raid Gladys' pantry. By dawn, they are nearly done when RJ spots one last item to replace on Vincent's list, a can of "Spuddies" potato chips; despite Verne trying to get them to leave, RJ insists on getting the can, forcing him to reveal the truth about the food and Vincent. Gladys wakes up and catches the animals in the act. After, Stella goes into the kitchen and sprays her stench. As the animals try to flee, Dwayne comes in and is able to catch them all except for RJ, who abandons the group to return the food to Vincent.

As Dwayne starts to drive away with the caged animals, RJ delivers the food to Vincent, but at the last moment, has a change of heart and uses the wagon with the food to catch up to Dwayne's van, followed by an angry Vincent. The impact stuns Dwayne and frees the other animals, who turn the van around to return home. Meanwhile, RJ is chased by Vincent atop the van, refused to allow to come inside by the other animals who consider him a traitor. Eventually, Verne is able to convince the other animals that RJ is trying to help them, and they turn to help RJ defend himself from the bear. With no control, the van eventually makes a jump and flies through Gladys' home, destroying it.

The animals flee into the hedge, trapped by Vincent on one side and Gladys and Dwayne on the other. RJ and Verne come up with a plan, initiated by giving the hyperactive squirrel Hammy (Steve Carrell) an energy drink. RJ jumps out of the hedge to lure Vincent into Gladys' yard, while Hammy, moving at superhuman speed, activates the new extermination system, the De-Pelter Turbo. Gladys, Dwayne, and Vincent fall into a pile as the high-powered system comes on-line, producing a large beam of bright light that fries and stuns the trio and drops a cage upon them. Vincent is taken away by animal control to the Rockies, while both Gladys and Dwayne are charged with the highly-illegal extermination system, though Gladys retaliates by attacking an officer and tries to escape but is soon pinned down by another officer while Dwayne is able to escape from custody only to run into Nugent, who savagely chews on him. The animals regroup in the forest, and Verne assures RJ that if he had told them he needed help, they would have gladly given it because "that's what families do", and re-welcomes him to their family; Tiger, also now owner-less but attracted to Stella, is also welcomed. The animals find that while Hammy was in his caffeine-charged state, he had refilled their food cache with nuts to satisfy them for the year.

In a post-credits scene, the animals go to the vending machine seen in the beginning of the film and operate it in such a way that every product falls into the access bin. However, the amount of snacks prevents the access door from opening, prompting "Well, this is anti-climactic" from Hammy.

Roddy St. James (Hugh Jackman) is a decidedly upper crust pet mouse who makes his home in a posh Kensington flat. While his owners are away on holiday Roddy plays around the house. When a common sewer rat named Sid (Shane Richie) comes spewing out of the sink and decides to stay, especially as England are playing Germany in the World Cup final, Roddy schemes to get rid of Sid by luring him into the "jacuzzi", which is actually the toilet. Sid may be an ignorant slob, but being a sewer rat, he knows his plumbing. He plays along and instead pushes Roddy in and flushes him away into the sewer. There, Roddy meets Rita Malone (Kate Winslet), an enterprising scavenger rat who works the drains in her faithful boat, the Jammy Dodger. Rita does not like Roddy initially, but ends up taking him along as her arch enemy The Toad (Ian McKellen) sends his rat henchmen, Spike (Andy Serkis) and Whitey (Bill Nighy), after her because she had stolen back her father's prized ruby a long time ago. The Toad despises all rodents to the point of hateful obsession, blaming rats for his fall from grace (he was once Prince Charles' pet). He decides to have them frozen with liquid nitrogen. However, The Toad's plan fails. Worse, during their escape, Rita takes a unique electrical cable. The cable is required to control the Floodgates. The Toad's evil plan is to open the gates during halftime of the World Cup, drowning the rats and their underground city in sewage. He can then use the depopulated city as a home for millions of his own tadpole offspring.

Roddy finds that the ruby is a fake and breaks it in front of Rita, enraging her, for she can now not get the money she needs for her large family. Roddy offers her a real ruby if she takes him back to Kensington. Accepting the offer, the pair first stop to visit her family before setting off. During Roddy's stay, he overhears a conversation that causes him to think that Rita had double-crossed him, so he steals the Jammy Dodger. When Rita catches up to him, he is able to clear up the misunderstanding. The pair evade Spike and Whitey pursuing in a remote-controlled toy boat, with Thimblenose Ted and others on eggbeater jet skis. During this scene, Roddy and Rita share a quick love moment. Incensed at his minions’ repeated failures, The Toad sends for his French cousin; an infamous, if somewhat laid back, mercenary known as Le Frog (Jean Reno). Le Frog and his subordinates intercept the duo and retrieve the cable, but Roddy and Rita use a plastic bag to lift themselves out of the sewer (snatching away the cable during the ascent) and get Roddy home, though the Jammy Dodger has to be sacrificed.

Back home, Roddy pays Rita the promised ruby and an emerald, then proceeds to show her around his house. She at first believes he has family in the home, but noticing his cage, she realizes he's a pet. Roddy tries to pass Sid off as his brother, but Sid and Rita know each other. Rita tries to persuade Roddy to come with her, but he is too proud to admit that he is lonely. By now, they have fallen in love but have not told each other their feelings. She departs, both of them broken-hearted, but is soon captured by The Toad. Talking to Sid about half-time, Roddy pieces together The Toad's plan. He gives Sid his cushy position and has him flush him back to the sewers to find Rita and save the city. Together, they defeat The Toad and freeze the wave of sewage generated by the flushing of countless toilets during the FIFA World Cup half-time with liquid nitrogen before it drowns the entire rat population.

Rita and Roddy build the Jammy Dodger Mark Two and set off in her with Rita's entire brood. A newspaper article reveals England had lost on penalties. Rita and Roddy become boyfriend and girlfriend. Later while the credits start, Roddy's former owner Tabitha comes back with a new pet (a cat), which frightens Sid.

At a young age, Colin Sullivan (Damon) is introduced to organized crime through Irish mobster Frank Costello (Nicholson) in the Irish neighborhood of South Boston. Costello trains him to become his mole inside the Massachusetts State Police. Sullivan is accepted into the Special Investigations Unit, which focuses on organized crime. Before he graduates from the Police Academy, Billy Costigan (DiCaprio) is asked by Captain Oliver Queenan (Sheen) and Staff Sergeant Sean Dignam (Wahlberg) to become an Undercover Agent, as his childhood and family ties to organized crime make him a perfect infiltrator. He drops out of the Academy and does time in prison on a fake assault charge to increase his credibility.

As both infiltrate their respective organizations, Sullivan begins a romance with psychiatrist Madolyn Madden (Farmiga). Costigan sees her for his probation and also develops a relationship with her. Shortly after, Costigan makes love to her before she moves in with Sullivan. After Costello barely escapes a sting operation, both moles become aware of the other's existence, though not their respective identities. Sullivan is told to find the "rat" and asks Costello for his underlings' personal information (birthdates, Social Security numbers, etc.) to determine who is the informant within Costello's crew. Costigan follows Costello into a pornographic movie theater where Costello gives Sullivan an envelope with the details. Costigan then chases Sullivan through Boston's Chinatown district. When it is over, both men still do not know each other's identity. Sullivan then has Queenan tailed as he meets Costigan in an abandoned building. Sullivan sends Costello's men in and Queenan distracts them to let Costigan escape. He is thrown from the roof and dies at the feet of Costigan. When the mobsters escape, Costigan pretends he has come to rejoin them. The trailing State Troopers open fire on Costello's crew, which causes casualties on both sides. Later, at one of Costello's safe houses,a mortally wounded Delahunt (Mark Rolston), one of Costello's enforcers, tells Costigan "I gave you the wrong address, but you showed up at the right one." He then asks him if he knows why he didn't say anything about it before dying. When Costello's henchman "Fitzy" (O'Hara) does an unsuccessful job of hiding the corpse, it is revealed that Delahunt was also an undercover police officer. Costello berates the rest of his crew for believing this, knowing that the more likely explanation is that the police declared Delahunt an informant in an attempt to stop Costello himself from continuing his search for the mole.

Now under scrutiny, Sullivan is attacked by a suspicious Dignam because of Queenan's death. Captain George Ellerby (Baldwin) places Dignam on leave. Using Queenan's phone, Sullivan calls Costigan, who refuses to abort his mission. Sullivan learns of Costello's role as an informant for the FBI from Queenan's diary, causing him to worry about his dual identity being revealed. Sullivan calls Costello to inform him he has a tail as he and his men drive to a cocaine drop-off. Costello furiously demands that Sullivan gets rid of the tail, to which he agrees. Fed up with Costello's arrogance, along with the knowledge that he is an FBI informant, Sullivan gets rid of the tail and convinces Ellerby to a special ops strike at the drop-off where he intends to confront Costello. With Costigan's help, Sullivan tracks down where the drop-off is located. Costello and his crew become trapped in a gunfight with Police, resulting in most of the mobsters being killed. As Costello attempts an escape he is confronted by Sullivan. Costello admits he is an occasional FBI mole and tries to shoot Sullivan, but misses. Sullivan returns fire, hitting Costello in the center of the chest. Near death, Costello tries to shoot Sullivan again, but Sullivan dodges the shot and returns fire, killing Costello. With Costello dead, Sullivan is applauded the next day by everyone on the Force. In good faith, Costigan comes to him for restoration of his true identity, but notices an envelope containing details of Costello's men on Sullivan's desk and flees, realizing that Sullivan is Costello's inside man. Knowing he has been found out, Sullivan erases all records of Costigan from the Police computer system.

Costigan leaves an envelope in the care of Madolyn and tells her he will talk with her in two weeks. Later, she reveals to Sullivan that she is pregnant, but it isn't revealed who the father is. Soon after, she discovers a package in the mail from Costigan to Sullivan. It contains a CD and a phone number for Sullivan. Madolyn listens and discovers that it contains recordings of Costello's conversations with Sullivan. Sullivan walks in on her and tries to assuage her suspicions, but she locks herself in the bathroom. He hastily contacts Costigan, who reveals that Costello recorded every conversation he had with Sullivan. Since Costigan was the only person Costello actually trusted, Costello's attorney left Costigan in possession of the recordings and therefore Costigan intends to implicate Sullivan. They agree to meet at the building where Queenan was killed.

On the roof, Costigan catches Sullivan off-guard, assaults him and hand-cuffs him at gunpoint. As Costigan had secretly arranged, Trooper Brown (Anderson), Costigan's class mate at the Academy, appears on the roof as well. Shocked, Brown draws his gun on Costigan. Costigan attempts to justify his actions by exposing Sullivan as the rat, but Brown does not fully believe him. Costigan asks Brown why Dignam did not accompany him as per their agreement, but Brown does not answer. Using Sullivan as a shield, Costigan leads Sullivan into the elevator. As it reaches the ground, Costigan is shot point blank in the head by Trooper Barrigan (Dale), another Police Officer on Costello's pay-roll. Brown reaches the ground floor and is killed by Barrigan as well. Barrigan reveals to Sullivan that Costello had more than one mole in the Police and suggests that they must avoid being traded to the FBI. Sullivan waits for Barrigan to turn then shoots him in the back of the head, leaving himself as the only survivor. At Police Headquarters, Sullivan blames all mole activity on Barrigan and has Costigan posthumously given the Medal of Merit.

At Costigan's funeral, Sullivan and Madolyn stand at the grave. She is clearly distraught. Sullivan attempts to discuss the future of her child, but she ignores him. Later, Sullivan enters his apartment with groceries and, to his surprise, finds Dignam waiting for him, wearing hospital footies and surgical gloves to leave no trace of his presence and aiming a suppressed pistol straight at him. Aware of Sullivan's treachery, Dignam shoots him in the temple. As Sullivan collapses dead, Dignam calmly exits Sullivan's apartment. A rat crawls along the apartment balcony, with the view of the Massachusetts State House in the background.

The film is about always lucky and popular Ashley Albright (Lindsay Lohan) who has an extremely fortunate life and is always experiencing remarkable strokes of luck. The audience is also introduced to Jake Hardin (Chris Pine), who is followed by bad luck wherever he goes. He manages a small music group called McFly.

Persistent in her efforts to hold onto a client, Ashley manages to sell Damon Phillips (Faizon Love) on the idea of a masquerade party. When Ashley's boss, Peggy, learns of the plan, she is, to Ashley's surprise, impressed with the idea, leaving her with the task of organizing the party independently. Jake, hearing of the party and of the number of possible sponsors who could be there, hatches a plan to attend, in order to meet a very famous man (Phillips) who could publicise his band. He poses as a dancer for the masquerade party and gains entry.

During the party, Ashley is confronted by a fortune teller who warns her she will soon be struck by bad luck. As Jake wanders around the party, he is struck by Ashley's beauty and asks her to join him in a dance, during which they kiss. Neither can see the other's face, as they are both wearing masks. During the kiss, their luck is switched: Jake gets Ashley's good luck and Ashley gets Jake's normally rotten luck. Jake spots Phillips and saves him from a taxi cab that nearly hit him. By way of saying thank you, Phillips, who is in charge of a major record company, signs up McFly. Meanwhile, Ashley's bad luck kicks in and she goes to jail (the guy she set her boss up with for the party turns out to be a prostitute).

Desperate to regain her luck, Ashley revisits the fortune teller, who explains that, in order for her life to return to what it was before, she must again kiss the person she kissed at the party. Ashley begins hunting down all the dancers from the company who had supplied the dancers at the party. While on her search, Ashley tries to get some food from a cafe but is rejected because she doesn't have enough money. She creates mass chaos (due to bad luck) and makes a mad dash out of the cafe with the help of Jake, who offers Ashley his previous job as a janitor/food delivery person at the bowling alley. Ashley, desperate for a job, accepts immediately.

Later, Jake takes Ashley to the place where McFly is practicing. She discovers that Jake is the one who has stolen her luck. Seizing her chance, she kisses him, whereupon he gets his bad luck back; Ashley's luck has returned. That night, she thinks hard about her life and about how Jake had put his (her) good fortune to use. She decides that her life was more enjoyable without luck and goes to Jake's first concert for McFly, during which things aren't running smoothly.

Ashley kisses Jake, given luck again, and the concert is saved. Ashley decides to end contact with Jake, as she doesn't want their luck to be switched again; she believes Jake put the good luck to better use than she ever did. She goes to the railway station, where Jake finds her and tries to convince her that she was all he wanted since the party. They then kiss each other relentlessly, causing their luck to swap so quickly that they no longer know who has the good luck and who has the bad. When they see Jake's little cousin Katy and both of them kiss her at the same time, she gets all the luck and wins a scratch card lottery of forty-five dollars. Later, when they find a quarter, they decide that they still have some luck left. But only seconds later, they are drenched by a broken water line.

Mende fisherman Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou) is captured by the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels during a raid and subsequent massacre of his village in Shenge. Instead of cutting off his hands, Solomon is enslaved to work as a miner in the diamond fields under the command of warlord Captain Poison (David Harewood), while his son Dia (Kagiso Kuypers) is conscripted into the rebel forces and brainwashed into becoming a hardened, cold-blooded killer. The RUF use the diamonds to fund their war effort, often trading them directly for weapons. One day, Solomon finds an enormous, pink diamond but is caught by Capt. Poison as he secretly buries it in the ground nearby. Moments later, government troops attack the mine and Capt. Poison is injured before he can get to the stone. Both he and Solomon are taken to prison in Freetown along with the rest of the rebels.

Meanwhile, Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio), a white Rhodesian (from todays Zimbabwe) mercenary and gunrunner, is arrested attempting to smuggle diamonds into Liberia. Archer had been transporting the diamonds to Afrikaner mercenary, Colonel Coetzee (Arnold Vosloo), his former commander in the 32 Battalion, the most decorated unit of the South African Border War made up of Angolan and Rhodesian soldiers and white South African officers. Coetzee is in turn employed by Tiara Diamond Company executive, Rudolph Van de Kaap (Marius Weyers) and his deputy, Rupert Simmons (Michael Sheen). Upon hearing of the pink diamond, Archer arranges for Solomon's release from prison; offering to help Solomon find his family if he leads Archer to the diamond. The RUF launches a massive assault on Freetown and crushes the government forces present, forcing Archer and Solomon to steal away from the city at night.

In Forécariah, Guinea, American journalist and humanitarian, Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly), allows Archer and Solomon to sneak into Kono with her press convoy, in exchange for information for her story exposing the flow of "blood diamonds" out of Africa. Archer provides proof that Van de Kaap controls the market by illegally stockpiling vast amounts of diamonds to decrease the supply and keep the selling price high. The press convoy comes under attack by the RUF and the other news team members are killed. Archer, Solomon and Maddy narrowly escape and find their way to a Sierra Leone mercenary camp where an attack force, led by Col. Coetzee, prepares to retake Sierra Leone.

Archer and Solomon leave the camp to trek through the jungle while Maddy boards a plane carrying foreigners out of the conflict zone. Eventually, they reach Capt. Poison's mining camp, but Solomon is captured while trying to rescue a brainwashed Dia, who refuses to acknowledge his father. Archer calls in the coordinates to the South African mercenary force, also after the diamond, who launch an air strike via an Mi-24 Gunship. Amidst the chaos, Solomon kills Capt. Poison with a shovel and the remaining RUF rebels are captured. Col. Coetzee makes a dubious arrangement to split the sale with Archer, and threatens Dia's life, forcing Solomon to retrieve the stone. Archer is then mortally wounded when he preemptively kills Coetzee and two other soldiers, realizing they'll kill him, Solomon, and Dia once they get the diamond. Dia holds Archer and Solomon at gunpoint, but, after an emotional talk, Solomon manages to convince his son of his own retained innocence and Dia agrees to return home with him.

The trio flee from Coetzee's men and make their way from the valley towards an airstrip atop a nearby ridge where Archer has prearranged to rendezvous with a pilot, Nabil (Jimi Mistry), in his GA8 Airvan. Before they reach the ridge, Archer collapses from his wounds and hands over the diamond to Solomon, then holds off the mercenaries as Solomon and Dia escape in the plane. Archer makes a final call to Maddy and asks her to help Solomon, before dying peacefully as he looks out upon the beautiful African landscape. In London, Solomon hands over the diamond to Simmons in exchange for £2 million and his family. Maddy secretly photographs the deal and later publishes a magazine piece exposing the trade in "conflict" or "blood" diamonds, detailing Van de Kaap's criminal actions and ruining him and his company. The trio flee from Coetzee's men and make their way from the valley towards an airstrip atop a nearby ridge where Archer has prearranged to rendezvous with a pilot, Nabil (Jimi Mistry), in his GA8 Airvan. Before they reach the ridge, Archer collapses from his wounds and hands over the diamond to Solomon, then holds off the mercenaries as Solomon and Dia escape in the plane. Archer makes a final call to Maddy and asks her to help Solomon, before dying peacefully as he looks out upon the beautiful African landscape. In London, Solomon hands over the diamond to Simmons in exchange for £2 million and his family. Maddy secretly photographs the deal and later publishes a magazine piece exposing the trade in "conflict" or "blood" diamonds, detailing Van de Kaap's criminal actions and ruining him and his company. After admiring Archer's photograph in Maddy's article, Solomon tells of his experiences at a conference on blood diamonds in Kimberley, South Africa, his speech is met with a standing ovation as the film ends.

Viola Hastings (Amanda Bynes) is a high school soccer player at Cornwall, which has just cut its girls' soccer team. After her request to join the boys' team is refused by the misogynistic coach, she finds a way to play for Cornwall's rival, Illyria. Viola's twin brother, Sebastian (James Kirk), is supposed to enter Illyria as a new student, and since he is instead going to a contest in London with his fledgling band, Sebastian asks Viola to cover for him by telling the school that he is sick and each of their parents (who are divorced) thinks that he is staying with the other.

Viola instead decides to pass herself off as Sebastian and join the boys' soccer team at Illyria. She hopes to beat the Cornwall team and humiliate her cocky and sexist goalie ex-boyfriend, Justin (Robert Hoffman). With the help of her friends, Viola becomes the quirky "Sebastian".

At Illyria, Viola's roommate is Duke Orsino (Channing Tatum), a good-looking striker on the soccer team. Tryouts see Viola assigned to second string, much to her disappointment. Meanwhile, "Sebastian"'s lab partner, Olivia (Laura Ramsey), develops a crush on him, which frustrates Duke, who likes Olivia. In exchange for "Sebastian's" help in getting Olivia's attention, Duke agrees to put in extra soccer practice time with him. Coach Dinklage eventually moves "Sebastian" up to first string, and she is delighted. Elsewhere, Olivia goes on a date with Duke to make "Sebastian" jealous, remaining far more interested in him than in Duke. Encouraged by Viola, she decides to go directly to Sebastian and tell him how she feels.

The plot becomes complicated when the real Sebastian returns from London a day early. When he arrives at Illyria, Olivia runs up and kisses him. Duke, seeing this, believes his roommate has betrayed him and after arguing with "Sebastian" kicks him out. Viola stays in Eunice's room and oversleeps, causing the real Sebastian to wind up on the field playing in what should be his sister's spot in the next day's much-anticipated game against Cornwall. Principal Gold (David Cross), who has been told of Viola's impersonating Sebastian by two students, Monique and Malcolm, halts the game and informs the crowd that Sebastian is a girl. The real Sebastian being present instead, he proves himself to be male by pulling down his shorts and exposing his genitals off-screen. At half-time, Viola explains the situation to Sebastian and they switch places again.

Later on in the game Viola explains that she has been impersonating her brother, finally convincing Duke and everyone else by showing them her breasts (again, off screen). The coach agrees to let Viola keep playing anyway, sternly informing the Cornwall coach that Illyria doesn't discriminate based on gender and he calls out the coach for his sexist ways. Illyria wins the game on a penalty kick when Viola scores a goal (after a save and then pass from Duke) past her ex-boyfriend Justin.

Everyone at Illyria celebrates their victory over Cornwall, except for Duke who is hurt at Viola's deception. She invites Duke to her debutante ball. They meet in a garden and head to the Debutante ball, where they are introduced, come on stage, and kiss. At the end of the film, Viola and Duke are shown playing on the soccer team of Illyria a year later, both on the first string.

Dilios, a Spartan soldier, narrates the story of Leonidas, from boyhood to the throne of Sparta. Years later, a Persian messenger arrives at the gates of Sparta demanding the submission of Sparta to King Xerxes. In response to this demand, Leonidas and his guards kick the messenger into a large well. Knowing this will prompt a Persian attack, Leonidas visits the Ephors, ancient leprosy-ridden priests whose blessing he needs before the Spartan council will authorize going to war. He proposes they repel the numerically superior Persians by using the terrain of Thermopylae (the Hot Gates) and funnel the Persians into a narrow pass between the rocks and the sea. The Ephors consult the Oracle, who decrees that Sparta must not go to war during their religious festival. As Leonidas departs, two agents of Xerxes appear (one of them - Theron - a Spartan) who bribe the Ephors with concubines and money.

Leonidas follows his plan anyway, setting out with only 300 soldiers, whom he calls his personal guards to avoid needing the council's permission. Though he regards the mission as certain suicide, he hopes the sacrifice will spur the council to unite against Persia. On the way to Thermopylae, Arcadians join the Spartans. At Thermopylae they construct a wall to contain the approaching Persian advance. As construction goes on, Leonidas meets Ephialtes, a hunchbacked Spartan in exile whose parents fled Sparta to spare him certain infanticide. Wanting to redeem his father's name, Ephialtes asks to join the fight; he warns Leonidas of a secret path the Persians could use to outflank and surround them. Though Leonidas sympathizes with Ephialtes' will to fight, he turns him down, as Ephialtes cannot properly hold a shield: this would compromise the Spartans phalanx formation.

Before the battle, the Persians demand that the Spartans lay down their weapons. Leonidas refuses and with their tightly knit phalanx formation, the Spartans use the narrow terrain to repeatedly rebuff the advancing Persian army. Xerxes personally parleys with Leonidas, offering him wealth and power in exchange for his loyalty and surrender. Leonidas declines and Xerxes sends his elite guard, the feared Immortals, to attack them, but the Spartans successfully dispatch them although they suffer a few casualties of their own. Xerxes then sends a number of exotic weapons at the Spartans, including black powder bombs and giant war beasts, but all of these attacks fail. During these attacks, Astinos is killed, which drives his father Captain Artemis in a fit of rage.

Angered by Leonidas' rejection, Ephialtes defects to the Persians and informs them of the secret path. When they realize Ephialtes' treachery, the Arcadians retreat and Leonidas orders Dilios to return to Sparta to tell the Council of their sacrifice. Though Dilios had recently injured his left eye in combat, he is still fit for battle, but Leonidas decides to use Dilios' gift for storytelling to appeal to the Spartan council. Though reluctant to leave his brothers behind, Dilios leaves with the Arcadians.

In Sparta, Theron blackmails Queen Gorgo (Leonidas' wife) into having sex with him in exchange for his help in persuading the Spartan council to send reinforcements to Leonidas. However, following her address to the Council, Theron publicly betrays the Queen by accusing her of adultery, prompting the councilmen to cry out in outrage and Gorgo to kill him in a fit of anger. The dagger that Gorgo uses to kill Theron pierces his purse, spilling Persian coins from his robe, revealing his role as traitor and the Council agrees to unite against Persia.

At Thermopylae, the Persians use the goat path to surround the Spartans. Xerxes' General demands their surrender, again offering Leonidas titles and prestige. Leonidas seemingly bows in submission, allowing Stelios to leap over him and kill the General instead. Furious, Xerxes orders his troops to attack. Leonidas rises and hurls his spear at Xerxes, cutting the King on the cheek, thus fulfilling an earlier promise to "make the God-King bleed". Visibly disturbed by this reminder of his mortality, Xerxes watches as all the Spartans are slaughtered by a massive barrage of arrows. Moments before his death, Leonidas pledges his undying love to Gorgo.

Concluding his tale before an audience of Spartans on the edge of the battlefield a year after Thermopylae, Dilios relates how the Persian army is depleted by desertions, out of fear and the heavy casualties they suffered at the hands of a mere 300 Spartans. Word of their valiant resistance spread across Greece, inspiring the different city-states to unite against the Persians. Now the Persians face 10,000 Spartans leading 30,000 free Greeks. Although still outnumbered three to one, Dilios declares that the Greeks shall be victorious and praises the 300's sacrifice. He then leads the Greeks in a charge against the Persian army, beginning the Battle of Plataea.

Police officer Frank Williams (Steven Vidler) and his partner Blaine enter an abandoned house, only to find a young woman held hostage, her eyes ripped out. Suddenly, Blaine is savagely murdered by an unknown figure with an axe, before Frank is attacked too. Frank manages to fight off the man, but his arm is severed in the process. In the aftermath, detectives find seven bodies in the house, all of which have had their eyes ripped out.

Four years later, Frank is taking a group of delinquents -Russell Wolf (Mikhael Wilder), Richie Bernson (Craig Horner), Christine Zarate (Christina Vidal), Zoe Warner (Rachael Taylor), Michael Montross (Luke Pegler), Kira Vanning (Samantha Noble), Tyson Simmons (Michael J. Pagan) and Melissa Beudroux (Penny McNamee)-, to clean up the abandoned Blackwell Hotel in order to turn it into a homeless shelter, as explained by the owner Margaret (Cecily Polson). As the delinquents work, they do not realize that reclusive psychopath, Jacob Goodnight (Kane) has holed away in the rotting hotel.

Tyson and Richie decide to look for the previous owner's safe, which was never recovered after the fire that broke out in the hotel, while Kira deals with being reunited with Michael, her abusive ex-boyfriend who was the one who sent her to jail. While searching for the safe, Tyson and Richie discover a dead body. Richie freaks out and attempts to leave, but is attacked by Goodnight, who drags him into an elevator, in front of a terrified Tyson.

Margaret realizes the elevator is being used, and informs Frank's partner, Hannah (Tiffany Lamb), who goes to check if everyone is in their rooms. However, the elevator does not stop and takes Hannah up into the damaged floors of the hotel, where she is swiftly killed by Goodnight, who rips her eyes out. Meanwhile, Christine agrees to help Kira escape the hotel after catching Michael hurting her in the bathroom. While Kira is escaping, she is attacked by Goodnight, who drags her into the dumbwaiter. Christine, Frank and Margaret arrive just as she is assaulted, and Christine informs Frank the others have gone to the restricted penthouses to have a party. While Margaret stays behind to phone the police, Christine and Frank enter the elevator, where they find Hannah's blood, before bumping into Tyson, who warns them of the man who took Richie. Frank realizes it is Goodnight, before a hook goes through his chin and drags him away, dumping his body in front of Tyson and Christine.

Kira is held hostage by Goodnight, due to her religious tattoos. She awakens in Goodnight's lair, where Richie has been tied up. Goodnight soon appears and gouges Richie's eyes out, before we see a flashback to Goodnight's childhood (being locked in a cage, drowning in the shower, and watching a strapped woman have her eyes removed by his mother), suggesting his killing sprees are owed to religious abuse.

Meanwhile, Zoe, Michael, Russell and Melissa are taking drugs in a penthouse. Soon after, Russell and Melissa leave for some privacy. As the pair make out, they are attacked by Goodnight. They manage to escape and hide in a room, where they realize they can climb out the window to get to the ground level of the hotel. Russell lowers Melissa out of the window by a rope, but Russell is stabbed to death by Goodnight, who then lets Melissa fall. The rope stops her head from hitting the ground, but she hurts her hand on impact, leading a group of stray dogs to devour her.

Zoe and Michael become sick of each other and attempt to go back to their rooms, but are attacked by Goodnight. They hide, but Zoe is found when her cell phone goes off. She pleads for help, but Goodnight shoves the phone down her throat, killing her. Christine and Tyson decide to stay and try to find Kira, and bump into Michael. Goodnight finds them, and Christine and Tyson escape through the elevator shaft, forgetting about Michael. who is violently beaten up by Goodnight.

Christine and Tyson find Goodnight's lair and create a distraction to free Kira. As Christine tries to open Kira's cage, Tyson attempts to fight off Goodnight, but he gets electrocuted by his taser before being crushed with a vault. Christine hides as Goodnight returns. Margaret turns up and unexpectedly reveals herself to be the mother of Goodnight. Margaret tells Kira that she lured Frank back to the hotel to get revenge on him for hurting her son four years before, and that the prisoners all had to die because they were full of sin, including her. Margaret attempts to shoot Kira, but Goodnight kills her by accident, throwing her into a large nail that impales her.

Goodnight becomes enraged by his mother's death, and is about to kill Kira when Christine attempts to help. Goodnight grabs both Kira's and Christine's throats, but throws Kira away and attempts to gouge out Christine's eye. Michael appears and strikes from behind, giving the girls time to hide.

Goodnight searches the room they have hidden in, but the three of them catch him by surprise, sending him out the window to fall to his death. The three survivors escape to freedom, and the credits roll, only to be interrupted by a dog that urinates in Goodnight's empty eye socket.

In 1981, in San Francisco, Chris Gardner (Will Smith) invests his family's savings in portable bone-density scanners which he tries to demonstrate and sell to doctors. The investment proves to be a white elephant which financially breaks the family and as a result, his wife Linda (Thandie Newton) leaves him with their son Christopher (Jaden Smith) and moves to New York. While downtown trying to sell one of his scanners, Chris meets a manager for Dean Witter and impresses him by solving a Rubik's Cube during a short cab ride. Chris does not have enough money for the cab fare and flees the cab driver into a subway station where he barely escapes the cab driver but loses one of his bone scanners in the process. This new relationship with the Dean Witter manager earns him the chance to become an intern stockbroker. Despite arriving there unkempt and shabbily dressed due to an emergency, Chris is offered the internship. Chris is further set back when his bank account is garnished by the IRS for unpaid taxes, and he and his young son are evicted. As a result they are homeless, and are forced at one point to stay in a bathroom at a subway station. Motivation drives him to find the Glide Memorial United Methodist Church, which has a homeless shelter primarily for single mothers and their children. Due to demand for the limited rooms, Chris must frantically race from his internship work early each afternoon in order to land a place in line. Chris finds the bone scanner that he lost in the subway station from a demented man who believes it to be a time machine and it is now damaged, but Chris finally repairs it. Disadvantaged by his limited work hours, and knowing that maximizing his client contacts and profits is the only way to earn the one paid position that he and his 19 competitors are fighting for, Chris develops a number of ways to make phone sales calls more efficiently. He also reaches out to potential high value customers, defying protocol. One sympathetic prospect takes him and his son to a professional football game. Regardless of Chris's challenges, he never reveals his lowly circumstances to his co-workers, even going so far as to lend one of his bosses five dollars for a cab, a sum he can barely afford.

Concluding his internship, Chris is called into a meeting with his managers. His work has paid off and he is offered the position. Fighting back tears, he rushes to his son's daycare, hugging him. They walk down the street, joking with each other and are passed by a man in a business suit (the real Chris Gardner in a cameo). The epilogue reveals that Chris went on to form his own multi-million dollar brokerage firm.

Sheryl Hoover (Toni Collette) is an overworked mother of two children who lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her brother Frank (Steve Carell) is a gay scholar of French author Marcel Proust, temporarily living at home with the family after a suicide attempt. Her husband Richard (Greg Kinnear) is striving to build a career as a motivational speaker and life coach. Dwayne (Paul Dano), Sheryl's son from a previous marriage, is an unhappy teenager who has taken a vow of silence until he can accomplish his dream of getting into the US Air Force Academy in order to become a test pilot. Richard's foul-mouthed father, Edwin (Alan Arkin), a World War II veteran recently evicted from a retirement home for using and selling heroin, lives with the family. He is close with his seven-year-old granddaughter, Olive (Abigail Breslin).

When Olive learns she has qualified for the "Little Miss Sunshine" beauty contest that is being held in Redondo Beach, California in two days, she is ecstatic. However, money is tight and due to various logistical issues, the only way to make the trip is if the entire household goes. Despite Richard, Dwayne, and Frank in particular not wanting to go, they all band together to support Olive and embark upon the 800-mile (1,287-km) road trip in their ancient yellow Volkswagen T2 Microbus.

Family tensions play out during the journey, amidst the aging van's increasingly troublesome mechanical problems. When the van's clutch breaks early in the trip, the family discovers that they must push the van until it reaches 20 miles per hour and then run and jump in. Later, the horn starts honking unceasingly, resulting in the family getting pulled over.

Throughout the road trip, the family suffers numerous personal setbacks, and discover their need for each other's support. Richard loses an important contract that would have jump-started his motivational business and saved the family from financial ruin. Frank encounters the ex-boyfriend who, in leaving him for Frank's chief academic rival (who has also just received a MacArthur Grant), precipitated his suicide attempt. Edwin dies from an apparent heroin overdose. In order to reach their destination in time, the family smuggles his body out of the hospital, (illegally transporting it across state lines in the process), planning to make funeral arrangements after the pageant. During the final stretch of the trip, Dwayne discovers that he is color blind, and therefore can never get a pilot's license, which prompts Dwayne to break his silence and throw a tantrum, refusing to continue with the trip and revealing his anger and disdain for his family. He storms from the van in tears, but is calmed down by a hug from Olive and returns to the family.
After a frantic race against the clock, Olive is almost refused entrance to the pageant for arriving at the hotel four minutes late. As she gets ready, the family observes the other competitors: slender, sexualized little girls with highly styled hair, heavily made-up faces, spray tans, adult-like sexy swimsuits, and glamorous evening wear, performing highly elaborate dance, musical, and gymnastic routines with great panache. It quickly becomes apparent that Olive (plain, pale, slightly chubby, with unstyled hair, wearing large eyeglasses, and untrained in beauty pageant conventions) is not in their league.

As Olive's turn to perform in the talent portion of the pageant draws near, Richard and Dwayne recognize that Olive is certain to be humiliated and, wanting to spare her feelings, run to the dressing room to prevent her from performing. Sheryl, however, insists that they "let Olive be Olive", and Olive decides to go on stage. She joyfully performs the dance routine that her Grandpa Edwin had secretly choreographed for her: a burlesque performance to Rick James' song "Super Freak", innocently oblivious to the scandalized and horrified reaction of the audience. The organizers are enraged and demand Sheryl and Richard remove Olive from the stage. Instead, one by one the members of the family join Olive on stage, dancing alongside her, and Richard prevents pageant officials from touching his daughter.

The family is next seen outside the hotel's security office where a police officer tells them that they are free to leave as long as Olive never again enters a beauty pageant in the state of California. Richard tells Olive that her grandfather would be very proud of her, and the family happily piles into the ramshackle bus and heads back to their home in Albuquerque.

When a security guard appears, Tyler helps the other two escape and accepts the blame. He is sentenced to 200 hours of community service, which he has to serve at the school. While working, he watches a dance class and meets Nora Clark (Jenna Dewan), a student preparing for her "senior showcase." The performance could determine if she gets a job with a dance company. Later, Nora secretly watches as Tyler mockingly shows his friends a mix of break-dance and the ballet moves he picked up. Nora's dance partner sprains his ankle, leaving Nora without a partner. After auditioning some students, she doesn't meet anyone who is good enough. Tyler offers to help, but she at first refuses. Eventually she changes her mind, having seen him dancing earlier, and convinces Director Gordon (Rachel Griffiths) to allow Tyler to rehearse with her. During their initial practice session, Tyler is antagonistic toward Nora as well as her boyfriend, Brett (Josh Henderson), both of whom respond with haughty attitudes. As they continue to rehearse, Nora and Tyler grow closer, each teaching the other about their respective styles of dance. Tyler also befriends a musician at the school named Miles (Mario), who has a crush on Nora's friend, Lucy (Drew Sidora).

One day, Nora takes Tyler to a special spot on the waterfront, which is where she envisioned her routine. She tells Tyler she always imagined it would be with a large group, and Tyler helps her dream come true by recruiting younger dancers from the school to perform in her number. Brett gets a recording deal with a company, but in doing so, dumps Miles to sign the deal. Nora then breaks up with Brett after seeing his poor treatment of their friend.

Tyler asks Director Gordon if she will let him attend the school, and her response is that he must prove to her that he deserves a chance. Upon hearing this, Nora says the showcase can be his audition. After dancing together at a club, Nora and Tyler begin a romantic relationship. However, when Nora's dance partner returns, seemingly healed from his injury, Tyler feels that he is no longer needed in the routine, and angrily accuses Nora of treating him the same way her ex-boyfriend treated Miles. He leaves the group and so he goes back to janitorial work at the school. However, in the course of the training Nora has been incorporating many of Tyler's suggestions for the choreography, and it is now too difficult for the original partner to perform. Nora is left without a partner, but though she is crushed, she changes the choreography into a dance without a partner.

Later on, Skinny is fatally shot after stealing a car, making Mac and Tyler realize that they need to make better choices in their lives. Later at the event, Tyler shows up and Nora is shocked to see him. Tyler tries to persuade Nora to let him in. She initially says no but then thankfully changes her mind and Tyler dances with her onstage (using their original choreography), impressing everybody.

When Director Gordon tells a Director from a Professional Dance company looking to sign Nora that Tyler is a transfer student, Nora becomes pleased, and at the last moment Tyler kisses Nora and the story ends.

Babel focuses on four interrelated sets of situations and characters, and many events are revealed out of sequence. The following plot summary has been simplified, and thus does not reflect the exact sequence of the events on screen.

Morocco:-

In a remote desert location in southern Morocco, Abdullah, a goatherder, buys a high-powered .270 Winchester M70 rifle and a box of ammunition from his neighbor Hassan Ibrahim to shoot the jackals that have been preying on his goats. Abdullah gives the rifle to his two young sons, Yussef and Ahmed (played by local non-professional actors Boubker Ait El Caid and Said Tarchini), and sends them out to tend the herd. Competing between themselves and doubtful of the rifle's purported three-kilometer range, they decide to test it out, aiming first at rocks, a moving car on a highway below, and then at a bus carrying Western tourists on the same highway traveling in the opposite direction to the car. Yussef's bullet hits the bus, critically wounding Susan Jones (Cate Blanchett), an American woman from San Diego who is traveling with her husband Richard Jones (Brad Pitt) on vacation. The two boys realize what has happened and flee the scene, hiding the rifle in the hills that night.

Glimpses of television news programs reveal that the US government holds the shooting to be a terrorist act and is pressuring the Moroccan government to apprehend the culprits. Having traced the rifle back to Hassan, the Moroccan police descend quickly on his house and roughly question him and his wife until they reveal that the rifle was given to him by a Japanese man, and then sold to Abdullah. The two boys see the police on the road and confess to their father what they have done. (They believe at the time that the American woman has died of her wounds.) The three flee from their house, retrieving the rifle as they go. The police corner them on the rocky slope of a hill and open fire. After his brother is hit in the leg, Yussef returns fire, striking one police officer in the shoulder. The police continue shooting, eventually hitting Ahmed in the back, possibly fatally injuring him. As his father rages with grief, Yussef eventually surrenders and confesses to all the crimes, begging clemency for his family and medical assistance for his brother. The police take him into custody. The family's fate is unresolved.

The movie's first plot is interspersed with scenes of Richard and Susan. They came on vacation in Morocco to get away from things and mend their own marital woes. The death of their infant third child to SIDS has strained their marriage significantly as they struggle to communicate their frustration, guilt, and blame. When Susan is shot on the tour bus, Richard orders the bus driver to the nearest village with a doctor (the village is named Tazarine in the film). There a local veterinarian sews up the wound to stem the loss of blood. The other tourists wait for some time, but they eventually demand to leave, fearing the heat and worried that they may be the target of further attacks. Since Susan cannot travel by bus in her condition, Richard threatens the tour group to wait for the ambulance, which never arrives, and eventually the bus leaves without them while Richard is on the phone. The couple remains behind with the bus's tour guide, Anwar, still waiting for transport to a hospital (having contacted the US embassy using the village's only phone). Political issues between the US and Morocco prevent quick help, but a helicopter comes at last. After five days in the hospital, Susan recovers and is sent home.

Japan:-

Simultaneously, the movie tells the story of Chieko Wataya (Rinko Kikuchi), a rebellious, deaf Japanese teenage girl, traumatized by the recent suicide of her mother. She is bitter towards her father, Yasujiro Wataya (Kōji Yakusho) and boys her age, and is sexually frustrated. She starts exhibiting sexually provocative behavior and attempts unsuccessfully to initiate a sexual encounter with her dentist. Chieko also finds one of the teenage boys attractive and takes off her panties and exposes herself. Chieko eventually encounters two police detectives who question her about her father. She finds one of the detectives, Kenji Mamiya (Satoshi Nikaido), attractive. She invites Mamiya back to the apartment she shares with her father. Wrongly supposing that the detectives are investigating her father's involvement in her mother's suicide, she explains to Mamiya that her father was asleep when her mother jumped off the balcony and that she witnessed this herself. It turns out the detectives are, in fact, investigating a hunting trip Yasujiro took in Morocco. Yasujiro is an avid hunter and during a trip in Morocco he gave his rifle, as a gift, to his very skilled hunting guide, Hassan, who at the beginning of the film sold the rifle to Abdullah.

Soon after learning this, Chieko reveals her real motive in inviting Mamiya to her home. She approaches him nude and attempts to seduce him. He resists her approaches but comforts her as she bursts into tears. Before he leaves, Chieko writes him a note, indicating that she does not want him to read it until he is gone. Leaving, the detective crosses paths with Yasujiro and explains the situation with the rifle. Yasujiro replies that he did indeed give it as a gift, there was no black market involvement. About to depart, Mamiya offers condolences for the wife's suicide. Yasujiro, though, is confused by the mention of a balcony and angrily replies that "My wife shot herself in the head. Chieko was the first to find the body. I've explained this to the police many times." Chieko is leaning on the balcony (still nude) when her father enters the apartment. After leaving, the detective stops at a bar to read Chieko's note. Within the film, the note's contents are never revealed.

United States/Mexico:-

A third subplot takes place in the Americas where Richard and Susan's Mexican nanny, Amelia (Adriana Barraza) tends their twin children in their California home. Due to Richard and Susan being in Morocco, Amelia is forced to take care of the children. Unable to secure any other help to care for them, she decides to take them to her son's wedding in a rural community near Tijuana, Mexico, rather than miss it. Her nephew Santiago (Gael García Bernal) offers to take her and the twins to the wedding. They cross the border uneventfully and the children are soon confronted by the Mexican culture and street scene. The revelry of the wedding extends well into the evening, but rather than staying the night in Mexico with the children, Amelia decides to drive back to the States with Santiago. He has been drinking heavily and the border guards become suspicious of his behavior. Amelia has passports for all four travelers, but no letter of consent from the children's parents allowing her to take them out of the United States. Intoxicated, Santiago trespasses the border. He soon abandons Amelia and the children in the desert, attempting to lead off the police (his final fate is not revealed). Stranded without food and water, Amelia and the children are forced to spend the night in the desert. Realizing that they will all die if she cannot get help, Amelia leaves the children behind to find someone, ordering them not to move. She eventually finds a U.S. Border Patrol officer. After placing Amelia under arrest, she and the officer travel back to where she had left the children, but they are not there. Amelia is taken back to a Border Patrol station, where she is eventually informed that the children have been found and that their father, Richard, while very furious and outraged, has agreed not to press charges. However, she must be deported from the US where she has been working illegally. Her protests that she had been in the US for 16 years and has looked after the children (whom she refers to as "her children") for the duration of their lives do not secure lenient treatment. Near the end of the movie, the audience sees her meeting her son on the Mexican side of the Tijuana crossing, still in the red dress she wore for the wedding.

At the end of the movie, a phone conversation between Amelia and Richard is repeated from Richard's end of the phone. This is the original phone call at the beginning of Amelia's story. In this conversation it can be heard that he is allowing Amelia to go to her son's wedding because Susan's sister will be able to watch the twins. It is not until the next morning on another phone call they learn that Susan's sister cannot take care of them and thus Amelia is forced to take the children with her.

On August 7, 1939, after a mother dies giving birth to a child in a meat-packing plant in Travis County, Texas, the plant manager abandons the newborn in a dumpster. A tramp, Luda Mae Hewitt, discovers the baby while searching for food. She names the infant Thomas and takes him to the Hewitt residence.

In July 1969, Thomas grows up and goes to work in the same slaughterhouse, working for the same boss who put him in the dumpster. The plant is closed by the health inspector due to its horrid conditions. When the boss insults Thomas calling him an "animal", he leaves. Later that day Thomas returns and brutally mauls his boss with a sledgehammer, smashing his skull into his brain. While leaving he finds and takes a chainsaw. Charlie Hewitt (R. Lee Ermey), Luda Mae's son, learns from Sheriff Hoyt what Thomas has done, and accompanies the Sheriff to arrest Thomas. When they find Thomas, Charlie kills the Sheriff with a shotgun and takes his identity. Charlie and Thomas take the Sheriff's body home and butcher him for stew meat, telling the rest of the family that they will not leave and with "good people like the sheriff here" they'll never go hungry again.

Meanwhile two brothers, Eric (Matthew Bomer) and Dean (Taylor Handley), drive across the country with their girlfriends Chrissie (Jordana Brewster) and Bailey (Diora Baird) They are traveling to enlist to go to Vietnam, Eric having already been, and Dean with a draft card. They stop at a local eatery where they encounter a group of bikers. As the group pulls away, a female biker, Alex, follows them. Dean decides he's not going to Vietnam and starts to burn his draft card in front of Eric. Alex pulls a shotgun out to get the group to pull over. A chase ensues, ending with the group crashing into a cow and flipping their car when Eric turns around to shoot at the biker. In the process, Chrissie gets thrown from the car and lands in the weeds, out of sight of the others. Charlie Hewitt/Sheriff Hoyt soon arrives on the scene; he immediately shoots Alex, finds the partially burnt draft card and demands to know which one of the guys is a draft dodger. Eric claims it's his, Hoyt makes them put Alex's body into his car, forces the rest of the group in as well, and calls for Uncle Monty to tow the wreckage. The truck comes and tows the car, in which Chrissie has hidden herself.

Hoyt takes the group to the Hewitt house and calls for Thomas to butcher Alex. He then takes Eric and Dean to a barn and hangs them by their arms from the rafters; he later ties Bailey to the kitchen table. From the car, Chrissie sees her friends tied up and runs back to the highway. She flags down Holden, one of the bikers from the diner, and tells him about Alex and her friends. Holden takes out a revolver and follows Chrissie back to the house.

At the Hewitts', Hoyt wraps Eric's face with cellophane, slowly suffocating him for trying to dodge the draft. Dean begs him to stop and admits the draft card was his. Hoyt shoves a knife into Eric's open, cling-film covered mouth, making him cough up blood, but allowing him to breathe. He then releases Dean and tells him he can walk away free if he can do 20 push ups. As he does them Hoyt brutally beats him with his nightstick. Dean eventually does 10 push ups and Hoyt beats him more, then says he's free to go, although Dean can't move anymore. When Hoyt leaves, Eric breaks free from his restraints and gets Dean to safety while he sneaks back in the house and frees Bailey. As they escape, Hoyt comes outside with his gun and Eric stands in his way while Dean runs, when Dean stands in a bear trap Hoyt takes advantage of the distraction and knocks out Eric. Bailey escapes, taking Monty's truck, but Thomas hooks her in the chest with a meat hook and drags her from the truck. Eric is lying on the kitchen table apparently too injured/weak to move and Hoyt tells Eric "Why do you not want to fight me? Because I'm a pussy? That's what you said isn't it!? Well my nephew Tommy ain't no pussy, maybe you'd like to play with him!", Thomas then carries Eric face up over his shoulder into the basement where he sees Alex's body hanging from the ceiling above the chainsaw, parts of her limbs missing. Thomas punches him, incapacitating Eric, and nails metal straps to a wooden table across his wrists and ankles. Thomas then picks up a knife and cuts open Eric's shirt and twists his head back and forth, inspecting the skin of his face.

Holden enters the house to search for Alex, but ends up shooting Uncle Monty in one of his kneecaps, before being taken hostage by Hoyt. Hoyt leads him to a bedroom and calls for Thomas to help him. Eric now has a strap across his neck as well, and Thomas starts to cut the skin and flesh from his forearm. Chrissie hears Eric screaming and finds the door to the basement, Thomas opens the door and walks past her carrying his chainsaw. Hoyt shows Holden to Bailey, incorrectly thinking this must be the girl he's looking for. Holden points his gun at Hoyt to kill him, Thomas stops him and kills him with his chainsaw. Chrissie finds Eric and tries to free him, but cannot release the metal straps nailed to the table. He says he cannot feel his arm and we see that Thomas has removed all his skin and nerves. Chrissie hides under the table when Thomas comes downstairs with his chainsaw in hand. Thomas inspects Eric's face again then starts up his chainsaw and plunging it into Eric, killing him and cutting right through the table, splattering Chrissie in Eric's blood. He then skins his face, putting it on as a mask. Hoyt calls Thomas upstairs. Hoyt tells Thomas he likes his new face and to chainsaw off Uncle Monty's leg due to the bullet being unable to be removed.

Later Chrissie finds and tries to free Bailey, whom Hoyt has tied up again on the second floor. As Chrissie attempts to untie her friend, Hoyt and Thomas catch her and bring her downstairs for "dinner". There, Dean sits unconscious as Thomas slits Bailey's throat with a pair of scissors, then grabs Chrissie and brings her downstairs as well. On the way to the basement, Chrissie manages to stab Thomas in the back with a screwdriver and escapes by jumping out a window. Realizing their crimes will be discovered, Thomas chases her.

Dean regains consciousness, escaping to the front of the house. There he assaults Hoyt by smashing his head repeatedly into the solid concrete porch in a similar way Hoyt did to Dean and does this because of Bailey's death. He then heads out to find Chrissie. Meanwhile, Chrissie hides in the slaughterhouse. She cuts Thomas' face with a knife she has found, but he violently drags her to the floor. As he is about to kill Chrissie with his chainsaw, Dean arrives to stop him but Thomas impales and kills him with his chainsaw. Meanwhile, Chrissie makes her way to a nearby car and drives off into the night.

Chrissie, desperately looking for help, sees a Deputy who has pulled someone over. As Chrissie is about to pull over, Thomas suddenly appears in the back seat and Chrissie screams. Thomas impales Chrissie in her back through her stomach. Like Eric and Dean, Chrissie dies from the chainsaw. The car, out of control, crashes into the Deputy and a citizen, killing both of them. Thomas exits the car and slowly walks back along the dark road to the Hewitt house, leaving the dead bodies of the Deputy, the citizen, and the young Chrissie. The narrator explains the events and addresses "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" title.
