Beowulf (Ray Winstone) is a brave warrior who travels to Denmark alongside his band of soldiers, which include his best friend, Wiglaf (Brendan Gleeson), in answer to the call of King Hrothgar (Anthony Hopkins), who needs a hero to slay a monster called Grendel (Crispin Glover). Upon arriving, Beowulf becomes attracted to Hrothgar's wife, Queen Wealtheow (Robin Wright Penn).

Beowulf and his men celebrate in Hrothgar's mead hall, Heorot, in order to lure Grendel out, as he only attacks when the townspeople are celebrating. When Grendel attacks, Beowulf attacks him and discovers that he has hypersensitive hearing, which is why he interrupts Hrothgar's celebrations - The noise they make is physically painfull to Grendel -, and uses it to his advantage, mortally wounding Grendel, who flees back to his cave in the outskirts of the kingdom.

There, Grendel tells his mother what was done to him, and she swears revenge, attacking the warriors' rooms and killing all but Beowulf and Wiglaf, who go to her cave seeking to slay her as well. Only Beowulf enters the place, and is surprised to discover that Grendel's mother (Angelina Jolie) is a beautiful woman. She offers to make him a king if, in exchange, he gives her a son to replace Grendel. Beowulf gives in to her advances and returns, claiming to have killed her.

Hrothgar, however, knows the truth. He tells Beowulf that, much like Beowulf, he was also seduced by Grendel's mother and is Grendel's father. After naming Beowulf his replacement as king, much to the dismay of his royal advisor, Unferth (John Malkovich), Hrothgar commits suicide.

Years later, an elderly Beowulf is married to Wealtheow, who refuses to give him an heir. In result, Beowulf starts an affair with a local woman, Ursula (Allison Lohman). One day, a nearby village is attacked by a dragon, who leaves Unferth alive in order to give Beowulf a message: Grendel's mother has renounced to their truce and sent their son, the dragon, to destroy his kingdom.

Beowulf and Wiglaf once more venture into Grendel's cave and confront the dragon, who attacks Beowulf's castle and attempts to kill Wealtheow and Ursula. Beowulf stops him by ripping his heart off, but the fall mortally wounds him and the two die.

Shortly thereafter, Wiglaf, the new king, gives Beowulf a Norse funeral and watches as his body is taken by the sea. In this moment, Grendel's mother appears and attempts to seduce him, but, unlike the others, Wiglaf tries to resist her advances.
